Two Factor Authentication
Two factor authentication (2fa for short) is a security system available on JSEcoin and many other online platforms. It adds a second layer of protection for your account and helps prevent unauthorized access even if your email:password combo has been stolen, hacked, sniffed etc. We recommend everyone uses two factor authentication on every cryptocurrency platform because there is always going to be financial motivation for malicious hackers to try and compromise accounts.
How To Setup 2FA
To setup 2fa on your account simply download Google Authenticator or the Authy app onto your mobile phone.
Then go to https://platform.jsecoin.com, log in and go to settings and click the on button shown below.
You will be shown a QR code and a backup code. Go into Google Authenticator and click the + button in the bottom right. Then select scan a barcode from the list of options and point your phone at the QR code displayed. It is also important to make a note of your secret backup key. The best way to store this is to print it out on paper and keep it somewhere safe. You will need this key if you lose your phone or accidentally lose your 2fa account(s).
Now when you log in you will be presented with a request for your 2fa code. Go in to Google Authenticator and you should see a JSEcoin account with a six digit number. This number will change every 30 seconds but you will get 30 seconds leeway to enter the code so just type in the code that you see at the time. This will complete the two factor login process and your account is now more secure.
How to restore 2FA
You will need your backup key and the email address you used to register at JSEcoin. On the login page you will see a little link that says “Restore 2fa”
Click this and then enter your email and secret backup key. Click Get QR code and a new QR code will be displayed. You can then rescan this code with Google authenticator or Authy to restore your 2fa account.
One good tip I heard, and now use, is to store 2fa codes on two mobile phones at a time. I used an old android phone that was lying around not doing anything to act as a backup device. So whenever I setup 2fa on an account I scan it with my current mobile phone and the old phone to create two copies of the account. The second mobile phone can be kept somewhere safe, like in a fireproof security box. That way if I ever lose a phone I don’t lose access to my accounts.
